Course information

About this course

This course is aimed at veterinary surgeons comfortable with basic abdominal ultrasonography wanting to take their skills a step further. This one-day course will teach you to refine your technique enabling you to tackle the trickier abdominal organs.

The day comprises a combination of lectures and practical sessions, aiming to give as much hands-on time using an ultrasound machine as possible.

Throughout the course we will learn the normal and pathological appearance of the adrenal glands, pancreas and lymph nodes with a more in-depth approach to examining the gastrointestinal tract. You will learn the landmarks to guide you to the organs with a more subtle ultrasonographic appearance and we will examine the anatomy of the abdominal vasculature including the use of doppler ultrasonography.

Key learning objectives

  • Get comfortable with the GI tract – learn to find your way around the stomach, small intestine (including duodenum and ileum), ileo-ceco-colic junction and colon.
  • Where to find the adrenal glands including relevant anatomical landmarks.
  • Learn the landmarks that help us to locate the pancreas and how to identify normal vs abnormal.
  • Find and examine the major blood vessels and abdominal lymph nodes, learn how to follow blood vessels and identify lymph nodes.
  • Put it into practice – use the techniques and knowledge gained on the day to practice your ultrasound skills on real dogs.

Equipment and Facilities

IMV imaging will provide all the necessary ultrasound equipment.

Please note that because of the difficulty providing animals for scanning, delegates are kindly requested to bring a friendly dog with them for the duration of the day. Kennelling accommodation for the dogs will be available to use if required.

It is important that the dogs can be clipped as required for a full abdominal ultrasound exam.

Did you know - every delegate who brings a dog is entered into a prize draw on the course day to win a £75 Amazon voucher??!!

The day will be informal and relaxed with maximum time for hands-on learning.

Arrive for tea and coffee from 8:30am, ready to begin the lecture at 9am. We’ll aim to finish by 4.30pm which will count for 7 hours of CPD.
